Who Wrote the Bible

A long time ago, about 3,500 years ago, the Egyptians were a powerful nation who had slaves making bricks for them. These slaves were called Hebrews or Israelites.

An Israelite man named Moses was keeping a flock of sheep when he saw a bush burning with fire. The bush continued burning for a very long time like a lamp.

KJV Exodus 3:3-4 3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. 4 And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.

God spoke to Moses from the bush.

KJV Exodus 3:9-10 9 Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me: and I have also seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppress them. 10 Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.

God said he would bring the Israelite slaves out from Egypt. Moses then asked God's name.

KJV Exodus 3:13 13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?

And God answered:

KJV Exodus 3:14-15 14 And God said unto Moses, I am that I am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I am hath sent me unto you. 15 And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.

"I Am." God said His name is "I Am". This name is also pronounced Yahweh or Jehovah. Jehovah brought the Israelites out of Egypt using many miracles. God divided the sea so they could cross to the other side. God then met with all the Israelites at a mountain.

KJV Exodus 19:17-18 17 And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. 18 And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.

Jehovah spoke to all the thousands of Israelites at the mountain.

KJV Exodus 20:1-3 1 And God spake all these words, saying, 2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

All the people heard God's voice speaking to them.

KJV Exodus 20:22 22 And the LORD said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.

So there are thousands of witnesses who heard Jehovah speak. God spoke very much with Moses, and he wrote down God's words in the Bible. As many years went by, God would sometimes speak to other men who are called prophets. God would sometimes ask a prophet to write down the words in a book, and these books were also included in the Bible.

Between about BC 1500 and AD 100, Jehovah spoke to about 40 prophets, and all the words were written down to make the Bible.
